Overview

An inn since the 15th century, this beautiful property offers boutique rooms and modern stable rooms with free Wi-Fi, just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. It has a bar, library, and its Victorian walled garden is the largest in Canterbury.

Each room has a flat-screen TV and a DVD player with DVDs available, whilst MP3 docking stations are available on request.

A cold buffet and freshly cooked Kentish breakfast is served daily in the wood-panelled Quadrant room, using local organic produce where possible.

Located only 200 metres from Canterbury West Station and 100 metres from the riverside, The House of Agnes is rated 4-star 'Highly Commended' by the AA.

Hotel information

The House of Agnes takes its name from the Charles Dickens' story, David Copperfield. In the book, the building was the home of Agnes Wickfield and several passages describe aspects of both the exterior and interior of the historic building.

The heritage garden and buildings are rich in history; as well as Roman artefacts, an extremely rare scientific instrument, known as an “astrolabic quadrant” and dating from 1388 was unearthed during recent renovations. It was described as "one of the greatest ever scientific discoveries of its kind in the world" and is currently on show at the British Museum.

Food & beverage

An honesty bar is provided in the lounge area with small range of beer, wine and soft drinks.

Area information

The House of Agnes is just 100 metres from the very heart of Canterbury’s city centre. In fact, it is the only hotel to have such a large garden and grounds in the most prime location in the city. There are many places to visit in Canterbury, including the famous cathedral and an array of museums, restaurants and shops. The city is also only a short drive from many coastal towns, such as Whitstable.
